I’m probably the embodiment of everything you find annoying about modernity.
I have multiple vague job titles like Head of Digital and Research Director that don’t seem to mean anything. I travel a lot, for no discernable reason. I don’t live in Beijing, I’m “based” there. And I work out of a co-working space, at a startup, because of course I do.
Grew up dweeby in California, landed in China in 2002 intending to stay a couple of years. I’m still here. Plans never work out the way you think they will. Sometimes they work out better.
Spent about a decade doing interface design for the China market, and then moved into the consulting space. Studied Mandarin for a while. Still pretty into it.
These days I lead the tech division at research and analysis consultancy Trivium China, focusing on Chinese user behavior, China’s digital expansionism, and the social credit system.
I move around a lot. And I still blog sometimes, when I get the itch.
