The Road Back to Beijing

South Carolina

I remember the first time I landed in China. Almost 10 years ago now, I stepped off the plane in Changchun airport to the sounds of construction and the mewling of oxcarts. “Dude,” I thought, “oxcarts”. You know nothing, Jon Snow. (more…)

If you asked my friends to describe my temperament, you’d be unlikely to hear, “cleaves to the heavenly bosom of the divine” or “spends hours in quiet contemplation of the spiritual”, and more likely to hear, “is really too stuck on the ‘that’s what she said’ thing” and “should stop eating after the second helping but doesn’t”.

And okay, so I get up at noon on Sunday. But hey, my MUD character goes on holy quests for arcane artifacts and mana potions several times a month, thankyouverymuch. And I have been known to positively crusade for cookies. So imagine my surprise at learning that, according to Google’s Secondary Connections list, it turns out I’m connected by a distance of only ONE PERSON to a smorgasbord of ACTUAL PRIESTS. Picture proof of my consummate holitude after the jump.

So, I’m waaay late in reporting on this one, but a few of the Columbia, SC LUG guys and I spent at the first annual Southeast Linux Fest this year, and it was packed with so much perfect frosted dorkery, I came home all, “OHAI <husband>, if time == now then feedKendra(lasagna, salad) or die”.

Kyle nursed me back to English-speaking, pop-culture health with a steady diet of tabloid articles about Kirsty Alley’s weight gain and the horrific blog posts about Duke leaving Freezepop. (more…)

Internet Killed the Radio Star

One night, many moons ago, I stood in one of L.A.’s then-wierdest, now-defunct clubs waiting for the next band to be just as bad as the last one. It wasn’t. They were awesome. They were so awesome that I immediately spent the rest of my money on merch, fell madly in love with the bass player, and swore to defend their honor in the face of all foes, using the power of Greyskull as my weapon. It was a magical teenage moment bursting with the warm, fuzzy indie softness of knowing, just knowing, that we were going to be able to say “we saw them before they got big”. The band broke up 2 months later. (more…)

Vietnam: Mui Ne Beach

Written by Travel

The miniature tropical garden that spreads out before the porch of our honeymoon bungalow is infested with beetles. Big, skittering scarabs wait until sundown to rustle and clack out of the half-grown palm leaves in one-bug hordes. They collide in mid-air, bearing each other to the ground with the wight of their brief copulation. (more…)
